Bizarre Celebrity Burglaries

Singer Céline Dion’s Montreal-area home was broken into by a man who has been named as Daniel Bedard.

The intruder broke into the house using keys that Dion’s husband left in a car, and proceeded to make himself very much at home by having a bath for himself at the singer’s residence. He also helped himself to some treats from Dion’s kitchen.
“He opened the water faucets, was pouring a nice warmish bath [and] he even managed to eat some pastry that was in the ‘fridge,” police spokesman Franco Di Genova told the local news.

He also described the scene: “The suspect was coming down the big staircase and was asking, ‘Hey, guys what are you doing here?” “So the officers replied with, ‘What are you doing here?’ and then they proceeded to put him under arrest.”

Di Genova said the man had jumped a fence to get on the property and used a garage door opener that he found in an unlocked vehicle to gain access to the luxury residence. Bedard has been charged with breaking and entering, theft of a motor vehicle, causing damage to property.

Dion and her husband, Rene Angelil, were not at home at the time. Dion and Angelil usually live in Florida but use the Laval residence when they come home to Quebec.

The police spokesman also added there was another incident at Dion’s mansion in 2009 when another man jumped the fence, but was stopped by the security firm before he could enter the home.

Home or garage keys are often not guarded at all, which makes it available for almost anyone to enter your home. Investing in reliable key safes is the best thing you could ever do.

Beware of Distraction Burglary Ruse

Distraction burglary is a crime in which elderly persons are often the targets. The burglar seeks to draw a resident out of the house on a pretext. While the resident is occupied, an accomplice enters the home and picks up valuables such as money and jewellery.

Elderly individuals may be easy targets as they are more likely to live alone or they may need help in maintaining their property. Most ruse burglars tend to be more active in warmer months, when they are more likely to drive around neighbourhoods looking for senior citizens outside their homes tending their gardens or working on the exterior of their houses.

Recently, distraction burglars used water ruse to steal. According to Ripley and Heanor News, “burglars struck twice at a sheltered housing court for elderly people in Loscoe, near Heanor in Derbyshire.

“The burglaries took place at Bellfield Court and cash was stolen in both cases. […] a 93-year-old woman answered the door to a man claiming that a neighbour had been complaining about poor water flow. He said he wanted to check the water supply and the woman invited him in.”

To prevent distraction burglary, be suspicious of anyone who comes to your door saying they are utility worker, public official, police officer, door-to-door salesperson, lost person asking for directions, or surveyor. In a recent variation, criminals tell the residents that they have won a gift card or other prize.

Choose home safes to store and protect your valuables items such as jewellery, gold, share certificates, annuities, wills, other valuable documents and cash.

USPS to End Next-Day Delivery of Letters

US Postal Service announced that it will soon drop any promises of next-day delivery for first-class letters in an effort to avoid bankruptcy in 2012. The forty per cent of the first-class mail that currently reaches people within a day will now arrive in two, or even three.

“It’s going to make the customer-service experience more difficult for people who want to send mail. It’s going to take longer. For an item that definitively needs to be there next-day, things are going to shift to FedEx or UPS,” said Jim Corridore, an analyst at S&P Capital IQ, for the International Business Times.

The cash-strapped U.S. Postal Service is looking to find $20 billion in annual savings by 2015. It sees reducing its network of post offices and processing plants as key to adjusting as consumers increasingly pay bills online and correspond by email.

“The U.S. Postal Service must reduce its operating costs by $20 billion by 2015 in order to return to profitability. The proposed changes to service standards will allow for significant consolidation of the postal network in terms of facilities, processing equipment, vehicles and employee workforce and will generate projected net annual savings of approximately $2.1 billion,” said David Williams, USPS vice president for network operations.

Besides ending Saturday delivery, the bill would eliminate door-to-door delivery for an estimated 35 million customers. Those that do not have a curbside mail box or a P.O. Box would start receiving mail at a cluster box located at street corners. Moreover, two hundred and fifty-two local post offices are being considered for elimination and 80,000 U.S. Postal Service jobs will be lost.

Fire Resistant Safes

Experiencing a fire that affects your house is a frightening, sickening and very upsetting experience. It is very important to know what to do to protect yourself and others from any possibility of harm.

Consider investing in a fire-resistant home safe. Most home safes are designed to protect their contents from fire. Fire is the number one concern of most buyers because, during an average lifetime, there’s a one in four chance of experiencing a household fire. The fire resistant safe is designed to give your valuables protection in case of a fire.
Placement of the safe in a part of the house that is less vulnerable to fire damage will help. Surrounding the safe with a simple fireproof structure will also increase the amount of time that a safe can resist high temperatures. One of the safest places for a fireproof safe is embedded in the concrete wall of a basement while a poor location would be anywhere in the upper structure of a building.

Success varies with the type of materials stored inside the safe since different items suffer damage at different temperatures. Consequently, 30 minutes of protection is most common for home safes, although you can also find safes that offer one or more hours’ worth.

Safes designed for documents need their interiors to stay under 350 degrees, while home safes designed to hold digital media are rated to stand up to stricter guidelines and need a much lower temperature to survive a fire. They are made of thick, fire resistant material that is designed to keep the interior as cool as possible during a burn, but don’t usually offer much protection in the case of theft.

Always Keep a Spare Set of Keys

Are you the type who happens to lose or misplace their keys all the time? With the rampant theft and car jacking incidents today, it’s a must that you have someplace to safeguard your keys.

Keeping a spare set of keys could save you a lot of hassle if you’re locked out of your home, but they won’t be any use if they’re on the other side of the front door.

If your regular set of keys has been locked in the house, you don’t want to destroy a good lock to get inside so you will almost certainly need a locksmith.

But if you had another set of keys outside your home, you’d be able to use them and save yourself the expense of calling in an expert.

Key safes have been providing secure storage and reliable safe access to homes and business for many years, however many people are still unaware of how they work and where to buy them and how inexpensive they are. Even though everyone is concerned with safety and locking their homes and securing their valuable possessions, not as many people take care of their key safety.

A key safe offers a discrete way of providing property access without compromising security. A master key safe comes in different sizes to accommodate large or multiple keys.

Keep your key safe code secure and your keys in the safe lock cabinet! It does not matter how many keys you have as long as you keep them in a safe and secure place.

If you lose keys outside your home, even if you have a spare set it is probably a good idea to change the locks as soon as possible.

Cocoa Scented Stamps

Grenada has one of the richest cocoas in the world. Grenada’s production of cacao is not very large, only about 800 metric tons a year. However, the export of cacao generates about 40% of the total income from export of agricultural products.

Therefore, the country issued in 2011 a unique sheet of 9 cocoa scented stamps, featuring chocolate. The sheet has been manufactured in an innovative manner to include a cocoa scent. It also includes a QR code with a link to a brownie recipe.

The African nation of Liberia issued in 2011 two sheets of chocolate themed postage stamps commemorating one of their leading exports, cocoa. Postage stamps on the first sheet are designed to appear as blocks of chocolate in an unwrapped candy bar, while the second sheet portrays a box of truffles – each stamp depicting a different gourmet confection. Both sheets are cocoa scented.

The stamp sheets are on sale at post offices throughout Liberia and through stamp dealers worldwide.

$10 Million Stolen From Home Safe

On March 16, an LA home was burglarised and property was taken from the residence.

According to Police reports, the unknown suspects jumped over a security gate, used an unknown hard object to smash the side glass door and entered the residence. Once inside the home the suspects searched the location looking for items of value. The suspects set off the security alarms.

Police say the burglars took the safe from a walk-in closet, and used a rug to move it down some stairs and out the front door. The victim’s safe was believed to contain personal documents, jewellery and cash valued at approximately $10,000,000.00. That is quite amazing to have that much value in a home safe.

Investigators, however, have expressed some reservations about the value of the items because the owner has been unable to provide documentation. Moreover, the homeowners said their house is insured, but the contents of the safe were not.

Homeowners should know that burglary resistant safes can be bolted to the ground, or can be concealed in a wall or anchored in a concrete floor. The burglar-resistant safe is constructed with solid metal walls and a heavy door resistant to attack by drilling, cutting or prying. Hardened and drill resistant metals are often used to slow down attempts to break in to this type of home safe.

Choose a safe with at least 2 solid steel anti-drill rotating bolts. Select a safe with recessed doors for insertion protection, anti-labyrinth mechanism, tamper-proof security screws and bolt-side reinforced mechanism. Furthermore, choose one that features a good quality lock equipped with relocking device so that just in case an amateurish thief tries to tamper with the lock, the device automatically relocks the bolts.

Managing Access to Holiday Cottages

Managing holiday lets can be challenging, especially when it comes to getting keys to holiday rental guests, cleaners or maintenance staff. If you are not on-site to meet your guests on arrival, then you need to have a foolproof way of ensuring guests receive keys to your holiday home.

More and more holiday cottage owners are now relying on the use of key safes as an alternative to leaving keys with their holiday letting agents! Key safes can also be useful when guests arrive late in the evening or early.

Posting the key, leaving them under a mat, hidden under rocks or in plant pots could dramatically increase the vulnerability of their properties to burglary and theft if keys get into the wrong hands.

Holiday home insurance companies will only cover theft claims if there are signs of forcible and violent entry. When a burglar uses a key hidden outside the holiday home, it would be considered an unforced entry, and then the insurer is likely to decline the claim.

By taking a few sensible precautions, the use of a key safe can be one of the safest and easiest ways of managing access to your holiday cottage. Locate your key safe out of sight and make sure that yours it is bolted firmly into brick or stone, avoiding soft mortar.

Ensure that you don’t leave the keys in the key safe for extended periods and your guests do not leave keys in the key safe during their stay. Moreover, choose a combination that will be secure, preferably with a 5 – 7 digit cod.

Investing in reliable key safes is probably the best thing you could ever do.

The Decline in the Letter Volumes

The number of letters posted in Britain has been declining.

According to Royal Mail, the letter volumes fell to around 59 million a day, with the average postbag now at a level not seen since the mid 1990s. The letters and parcels delivery business lost £41m, down from £55m a year ago.

In addition to the bad news already mentioned, the price of a first-class stamp will leap by a third to 60p next month, while a second-class stamp, currently 36p, will jump to 50p, a rise of 39 per cent.

The future of the U.S Postal Service is also looking increasingly bleak after a survey revealed that the average American household gets just one personal letter every seven weeks, compared to 1987 when the average household received a letter every two weeks.

Experts believe the rise of the internet as a preferred method of communication is the reason behind the descending trend.

Commenting on the subject, Aaron Sachs, a professor of American Studies and History at Cornell University, said: ‘One of the ironies for me is that everyone talks about electronic media bringing people closer together, and I think this is a way we wind up more separate. We don’t have the intimacy that we have when we go to the attic and read grandma’s letters.’
‘Handwriting is an aspect of people’s identity. Back in the day, when you wrote a letter it was to that one person, so people said very intimate things,’ Mr. Sachs added.
One of the most powerful and sincerest forms of communication that we see very little of today is letter writing, a real letter that is written on real paper and dropped in the post boxes down the street.

Burglaries over Easter Break

Generally, burglaries increase during the summer months. There is also a marked increase during holiday times such as the Easter break or Christmas holiday with larger numbers of people going on holiday leaving their houses either unsecured or clearly vacant.

Burglaries are always a concern for homeowners….and churches, it seems! Last year, over the Easter weekend, two churches in Bridgend, South Wales, were burglarised. A small amount of petty cash was taken from the first church while a safe containing some cash and 100 Easter Eggs were stolen from the second one.

A burglar will select his target because it offers him the best opportunity to carry out his crime undetected and with the fewest number of obstacles in his way. A building that presents itself as unoccupied and insecure is far more likely to be targeted than one which is properly secured.

What’s the best way to keep your house safe? Without doubt you’ve already installed an alarm system. Statistics prove that most burglars enter a house through the front or back door. So keep those doors locked and secure.

A burglar doesn’t have enough time to break into safe where you keep your valuables. But if it’s not bolted down, he’ll probably take it with him. Choose a safe with at least 2 solid steel anti-drill rotating bolts. Select a home safe with recessed doors for insertion protection, anti-labyrinth mechanism, tamper-proof security screws and bolt-side reinforced mechanism.

You can also ask a friend or neighbour to collect your mail and newspapers from mail box. Burglars will not even notice that you are gone. Remember to refrain from discussing the trip’s details on social networking sites before you go.
